Lockdown diary, Day 74

26 May 2020

Re-homed 13 tomato plants. Zoom call with a college friend, did research on a new novel. Took a walk. I’m reading The Nickel Boys, by Colson Whitehead, which as far as I am concerned may have the best first page in contemporary fiction. On an unrelated note, I’m looking forward to listening to this podcast because it sounds insane.

Traded 8 tomato plants for 3 purple sweet potato slips, which superseded the tomato-adoption scenario overall as the highlight of my day. My new seed packet from Southern Exposure Seed Exchange came in the mail, so I can start growing lots of other veggies I don’t actually have room for.

My Own Mission: Impossible

Grasping 5/4 time.

Over dinner, I complained to my musical kid that I cannot pick out the meter of pieces written in 5/4 time. (This has to do with the research I’m doing for the new novel.) Instantly he starts snapping the meter–the 5 with the left hand, the 4 with the right. Show-off.

If you’re wondering, 5/4 time sounds like this:

For the record, he kinda set me straight, but this time signature remains hard work for me. Why is 7/4 easier than 5/4? The theme song from Mission: Impossible is also in 5/4 time, but honestly, that doesn’t help.
